Very skillful story of a woman on death row

The plot of the film has our heroine shooting a human being during a religious crusade. She hasn't been long out of prison and is thrown back on decease row. While awaiting her date with destiny a minister arrives and she recounts her life. It is a life of pain and suffering that never quite goes right despite her best intentions.

Have you ever watched a movie that yous idea was extremely well done but which you couldn't not relate to at all? For me this is one of the few films I found that is beyond my scope of experience. The life and pain of this black woman simply did not connect with this white man. Don't get me wrong, I liked the film, I just couldn't connect emotionally with events on the screen.

That said this is very good movie. The acting is excellent. The story is compelling, fifty-fifty if I couldn't emotionally connect with it. This is a film to try if you come across it. You may not love it but you'll probably like information technology.

A Protestant DEAD MAN WALKING, but a little more hopeful.

If y'all loved Dead Homo WALKING as much equally I did, then y'all'll also appreciate this prison-set film based on a book and a play by AME Bishop Jakes. Similar Matthew Poncelet in Sr. Prejean'southward story, this i features a graphic symbol who is a composite of several existent life abused women whom the good bishop ministered to through the years. Michelle is on death row when Bishop Jakes visits her. At starting time she almost ignores him equally she works on a model firm made up of match sticks or minor pieces of wood. She had not expected him to come, he existence so large time--his face was on the comprehend of Time Mag--but it before long appears that their paths take crossed before and that her female parent is one of the clerks who works in his evangelism campaign. Earlier going any farther I should reassure any readers made nervous by the fact that a real-life bishop is a main graphic symbol, that this is not one of those syrupy Billy Graham films. It is an unabashedly religious, no, a Christian film, simply it is gritty in its realistic detailing of drug addiction, child abuse, prostitution and such, well deserving of its R rating. It is a compelling story of a woman's descent into hell and of her slow journey back. The bandage is excellent, with Bishop Jakes playing himself--non but in the pulpit, just in some intense scenes in Michelle'due south prison cell that demand more than than pulpit oratory. In another life he could have made information technology as an role player. The crew members are all Hollywood pros, and so the production values are excellent. A swell symbol is the house on which Michelle labors then long over--information technology is the last thing nosotros see earlier the fade to black and the credits roll, then it serves as a good symbol (far better than the full scale house in LIFE AS A House). There are plenty of interesting male, every bit well as female characters, so yous shouldn't expect at this as a "woman's film," nor every bit an African American one. Exploring the terrible damage those close to united states of america can practice to one another, and of the near impossibility of forgiveness, it's a film that I will exist thinking about for some hereafter.

Was and Is My Life Story on Film

I have never cried and then much in my lifetime. The characters in this pic were so close in name equally well as in nature that I felt I needed to write and tell the world. I am Michelle and I created my own prison for myself by not forgiving, allow alone knowing how to forgive. All I wanted was for my mother to believe what happened to me and do something about information technology instead of accusing me. Like Michelle, I also was not believed, merely told not to say anything to anyone. I was killing myself by eating excessively, not trusting or forgiving anyone totally, and in fourth dimension not getting the help I needed. My drug which was similar to Michelle'southward was sleeping effectually to effort to make myself feel better and feel accepted. And 20+ years subsequently, I still don't feel any improve. I could not stop crying. Something deep within me said go up and write this down then someone else could see that they are not the only ones going through something hard. I tin can honestly say that I have not survived my past. I am still imprisoned. The house that Michelle built is the house that I however reside in (no doors). Everyday I tell myself that I volition eventually forget and that it was non my fault. I must tell anyone who is reading this, that the situation alone will have away so much from you. I accept lost the strong relationship that I could have with my own girl. I honey my daughter, but find it difficult to be close to her. The molestation that I experienced has ruined me. I am a good person, but I demand direction. Earlier I experienced the molestation, I always thought that a girl/woman was strong enough to get through anything. I hate to acknowledge information technology, simply I was wrong. That day ended my life and my innocence. I feel like I am a functioning zombie. What makes me strong is that I can talk about it now. It took someone very shut to me to make me write it down. He said if you deceit face the person (my guilt) then write it down and it will brand you feel like y'all have told the person. Afterwards, he said mail it or throw it away. For all that good advice that I was given that day, I wrote the letter and I yet look at it. I sent it to my mother expressing my feelings, but similar Michelle'southward mother - no "I'm sorry" or "I should have believed you". My dilemma is that I cant seem to go that door opened. I am tired of belongings onto this pain. I need help. I will become the aid that I demand, just for today I feel practiced just being able to say that I still have the opportunity to get the assist I need. One day, I will be able to forgive my mother and the rapist, merely non today.

Had information technology's ups and downs.

Warning: Spoilers

*****MAY contain SLIGHT spoilers***** First, I want to to say the actual story was not bad. I could identify with Kimberly Elise's character and then much when it came to learning how to let the past go. I understand that fifty-fifty as she moved from level to level, she unknowingly dragged all the baggage with her. I think the story was absolutely engaging. I felt as if she was letting me accept a place in her mind and walk a mile in her shoes. This is one of the rare movies that has the viewer totally engrossed in the graphic symbol, watching the grapheme and at the same time, feeling the emotions of the character. This movie also opens your own psyche and unbeknownst to the viewer, your harbored pain and anger begins to come out. You begin to recall about the by and the events that scarred you and shaped the road of your life.

In that location were some electrifying performances in this film. Kimberly Elise should definitely have been an Oscar contender for this role. Loretta Devine , as usual, turned in a wonderful functioning and was totally absorbed by her character allowing her to come across as someone we could all possibly know. Clifton Powell'southward turn equally a consummate scumbag and scoundrel who later finds God was amazing. He totally captured the duplicity that lurks within every person. His soul and actions were definitely a battleground for evil. Debbi Morgan'south turn equally the aunt has shown how far she has come since her days as Angie on All My Children.

Now, there are some issues with the movie. First, TD Jakes definitely plugs himself and his work throughout the motion-picture show. He should as well stick to preaching and surrender acting. The cutting from the bodily story to his sermons can get annoying. Just as you lot become engrossed in the motion-picture show, the scene cuts to Jakes preaching on the pulpit. Also, it seems that every Television set station in this city carries merely TD Jakes because everybody watches him. This has to be i of the almost shameless attempts to plug I have e'er seen. He too comes across equally believing his own press. Listen for the "....THE man of God himself" introduction at the revival. Somewhat conceited? Overall, I would tell whatever woman, or homo for that matter, to take a look at this movie.

A must see for anyone who is battling with or seeking forgiveness.

This pic has such a powerful message! Kimberly Elise does a superb job every bit abuse victim Michelle Jordan whose life went spiraling down a black hole after her "innocence was stolen" past her female parent's lowdown-dirty-snake-of-a-fellow and her mother turning her back on the state of affairs. I watched this motion-picture show with my 13yr former daughter and it fabricated me want to concord her even closer to me than I already do because I tin't imagine her going through something like that. Loretta Divine also does an fantabulous job as her selfish-in-denial-only-e'er-"man-hungry" mother. Debbie Morgan is superb as the humorous, comforting, and advising family unit friend and Clifton Powell couldn't be anymore convincing as the serpent-in-the grass fellow. T.D. Jakes put together a stellar cast to bring such a moving and powerful story to the big screen. In that location are so many lessons taught in this movie besides every bit learned. The character of Michelle is trying to deal with trust issues from her standpoint also as others. In the scene where she has been ushered to a seat at church and the lady usher sees that she is wearing an electronic monitoring device on her ankle and then she asks her did she take a Bible and Michelle gets very upset and gives an upsetting reply. Then Michelle sees that others are taking and using the Bibles to study during the service and she realizes what the lady meant. Although it doesn't end all "warm and fuzzy", it is a must-see for anyone who is contesting with or seeking forgiveness.

Very touching and inspiring!

This movie (besides as the volume and play) addressed sensitive issues that touch the lives of men, women and children everyday. However, theses issues are usually not openly discussed and are often hidden, which leads to mental and emotional suspension-downs or destructive behavior.

The movie not only captured several issues, including sexual abuse, exact abuse, abandonment, low self-esteem etc. It also demonstrated the negative furnishings of covering up the bug through lies, misplaced aggression and deprival. I liked the way the movie displayed the effect that the revival incident had on each character that was involved. I was besides touched by the positive and encouraging words offered by the minister which ultimately had an result on the master character.

I t was a bully portrait of a human being struggle.. Forgiveness of others and ones self

Overall I idea the pic was good. The first time I saw it I came late to the theater and missed the requite away beginning.. So at the stop I was like "wow" what a stupor, this was bully then to my dismay when I saw information technology again I watched from the beginning and realized information technology was simply a shock to me. The atomic number 82 extra did a wonderful chore and I would like to run into her recognized for it. To the person who wrote virtually beingness happy they didn't buy the book, your missing out T.D. Jakes has great insight and the book/books are about more and so what this movie touched on. I went to a T.D. Jakes seminar at the forum and past the end of the nighttime in that location wasn't one dry eye in the place.

Impressive!

When my girlfriend dragged me to this movie, I went with her to treat her to function of her Birthday present; but secretly, I was dreading to see this motion picture. I thought that here's some other "Christian" made production, many of which seem to suffer from lack luster interim and weak direction.

None of those elements be in this riveting drama based on the composite experiences of various women encountered past TD Jakes through out his ministry. From the stunning get-go of the movie to its hopeful and centre warming stop, I was enthralled by the very realistic characters(especially the master character), their various struggles, and their varying Faith, or lack at that place of, in God.

This motion-picture show does not milk-toast the church or saccharide coat those who are Truthful Believers, but shows us for what we truly are; real sinners saved continually by existent Amazing GRACE and the Great Mercy of God.

For those who recall you have to exist lilly white to be accepted by God, I highly recommend this moving picture as a big dose of reality. Merely for those who just see the church as total of hypocrites, yous'll come away with an appreciation for how much God loves usa imperfect beings and why the Church is full of united states of america!

A must encounter!

I really enjoyed the picture show and got a take a chance to run across Bishop TD Jakes from a different perspective. I believe this is the side of ministers that we don't run across, where they visit the ill, prisoners, etc. And unless we have a crisis in our family probably will never see. Since I missed the first few moments I was a little dislocated by what was going on since the scenes jumped from the jail jail cell to the church to the by. However, the plot is non hard to follow. The characters were all great and did an excellent job in there parts.

I certain many feel its a picture show for women and that is not necessarily so. Later watching the movie I am definitely interested in reading the book.

More than than anything.., this movie is about liberation from your personal demons...

Renowned government minister and writer Bishop T.D. Jakes of The Potter's House of Dallas, Texas has brought to screen his acknowledged novel that has been a major hit amongst women in his ministry for nearly 10 years. Written at a time in his life when he doubted if he could (read: should) exist the 'vox' of the forgotten women, the broken woman, the fallen woman, ...the woman that is oftentimes invisible in most church building congregations, after the release of his novel, the overwhelming answer was 'preach on, T.D., preach on'. And preach he did, to thousands in his Adult female Thou Fine art Loosed conventions all across the state to sold out stadiums. It'due south not really a surprise when ane knows the history of the journeying that this project would be his first characteristic film effort. Some might argue that this is his most all-powerful work, particularly given the numbers that most lower income minority households now are single parent households and that translates more than probable to often existence led by mothers. What happens when these 'mothers' fall into hopeless situations that seem exterior the confines of the normal assistance that most churches are only equip to handle? It's in that chasm that Bishop Jakes institute his voice.., and calling.

Woman M Art Loosed, the moving picture, is an ambitious project. Well written, and acted by a stellar cast (more than on that later), it only suffers from a few small-scale problems that are mostly cinematic problems. The lighting throughout the movie was uneven and could take benefited from an overall continuity of theme, but all in all, this problem is minor in contrast to the activeness and dialogue on the screen. The outstanding casting of Kimberly Elise as the troubled lead, Michelle Jordan, who opens this movie, pistol in manus, in the midst of an altar telephone call at a revival coming together of Bishop Jakes, is both tragic and heroic every bit you learn of her desperation to make sense of her life'southward choices and conflicts. Kimberly brings a new definition to pathos, and in several scenes proves that she'due south an extra of great skill and technique, while never allowing the mechanics to exist noticed. Adept at emoting with just a look or turn of her brow, she breathes life into Michele's often difficult and challenging scenes with the ease of someone who'southward really been 'in that location' in the depths of despair. At it's core, WTAL is a love story. Love gone bad, love gone wrong, dear unrequited and love never fully developed. Michelle wants her mother, Cassie, to beloved her, to run across her and acknowledge her. Formidable actress Loretta Devine, portrays a mother that needed mothering, and unfortunately can't give to her daughter what she's never experienced. Failing her daughter at a about disquisitional moment in their journeying, creates the rift between mother and daughter and sets into motion that incredible opening scene. Pay close attention to the scenes that include these two actresses, together, for a principal's form in scene study.

But make no mistake, the heartbeat of this film is Bishop Jakes and his sermons. Whether being delivered in the pulpit or in a prison house prison cell, his message of restoration is ever nowadays. The moments that soar in this motion picture are those that centre on his fiery, common-sense sermons and his ability to bear on the very cadre of issues in uncomplicated and succinct analogies. Much more could accept been made of these moments and I retrieve the management in the services suffered a chip, but then again, how exercise you really direct the holy spirit? Director Michael Schultz is legendary and nevertheless this might be the trouble: his style is a piffling dated and isn't as edgy equally some of the more modernistic films of our times. That being said, I did appreciate his use of the close-upwardly that allowed u.s.a. to 'see' every nuance of emotion.

Information technology might prove a little hard to discover this film, but it's worth a diligent search. If for no other reason, for the sheer inspiration of the story and to observe major talent acting for one time in textile that they obviously believe in. I sensed that many of those tears that were shed, weren't all about the characters they were inhabiting. More than than a few actors were most likely 'loosed' in the procedure, as well. It's that powerful of a movie. Highly recommended.

Shut to home

I have merely just seen this picture show and it really touched my heart considering some of the things that Michelle went through I went through. The simply difference was that her step-father was my step-mother and her mother was my father and the sexually abuse was physical and emotional abuse.(I didn't end up in prison house though). Some parents, for some foreign reason, think that their happiness comes before their children. I don't sympathize that. I call up that a parent must always believe their child until they detect out they are lying, not the other way effectually. When you have a child y'all pledge your life to providing for and being in that location for that kid no thing what. There should be no compromise because that child is in the world because of your choice. I remember that this flick gives hope to those who experience like they have none. It gave me some hope that my life doesn't have to be the endless black hole that my stepmother wanted it to be.

Not a dry eye in the house

I had a chance to see a screening of the moving-picture show in Atlanta. It was a very powerful slice. Although it definitely has a religious theme, it is rooted in secular life. . The motion-picture show does not sugarcoat the bug that the characters go through, but it depicts the issues in a tasteful,non-vulgar manner that actually hits home. At that place wasn't a dry centre in the house. There were fifty-fifty some counselors on hand to help people bargain with the personal bear on of the pic. Kimberly Elise was outstanding. She is definitely a star on the rise... . I recall has the potential be the modern-age version of The Passion of The Christ.

Makes me glad I'thou non Catholic

Why, considering Catholics are taught that the merely mode to God is through the priest and other Christians are taught that believing in God, his teachings and the teachings of Jesus Christ is what gives you lot salvation. So I don't have to buy into Jakes' vision of the earth and black women in item. I gave this movie a four/10 just because I loved to see black actors working I only wish they could detect some other films to exhibits their crafts. I know that life is not a basket of roses only I believe that man is basically good that he makes a lot of wrong choices but give a break every wrong option in one movie! 25% of the black men were skilful, once more dope and weakness is all we ever meet of ourselves and oh yes beauty shops. I'one thousand glad that God touched during this moving picture and so that I could forgive the skillful Bishop and be glad that I never bought the book.

TD Jakes Needs To Stick To Preaching Merely Kimberly Elise Can Act

Warning: Spoilers

In that location are a lot of things in this movie that probably wouldn't plough out that manner in real life. For example, Kimberly Elise would not murder Clifton Powell during the centre of a church service. I know he raped and molested Kimberly'due south character when she was young. But she had plenty of opportunities to murder him. Why couldn't she wait until after the church service to blow him away? And every bit for Loretta Devine's ignorant graphic symbol, she should accept left Clifton Powell's serpent behind way before he raped Kimberly Elise'southward character. All mothers believe their own daughter before any man. In real life, TD Jakes would have never visited 1 of the members that went to his revival in jail. The moving-picture show ended in a bewilderment. We don't know if Kimberly Elise was executed or non. But it is very very rare for a adult female to exist executed. This picture show lost five of my stars because the plot was non realistic.

Poor Moving-picture show Carried Only By Elise And Devine!

I ordered this on OnDemand a few weeks ago and I wasn't at all impressed with the film.

I was, however, impressed with Kimberly Elise's and Loretta Devine's performances. Those two women lonely deport this mess of a film.

The picture show is filled with clichés. And the way the story is presented is sort of mismatched and should've been shown in the proper order, from forepart to back, not from back to front (with the catastrophe being first.) The film could've been a really groovy one if somebody touched up the screenplay and got a ameliorate director.

With that all being said, the flick has a powerful opening and two powerful performances from Kimberly Elise and Loretta Devine.

It'southward sorry how 2 actresses (both of whom are personal favorites of mine) are reduced to getting scraps like this for films.

Their immense talent is wasted on awful, forgettable movies such every bit this when it should be used in good quality films that zip them off to the Oscars.

It'south sad that Hollywood has this agglomeration of actresses that they accept no idea what to exercise with so the real talent is left to getting D-course off-white such as this.

I wouldn't say that information technology's a black or white thing as far as actors/actresses getting good roles merely Hollywood sure has a lot of underused talent with blackness actors. The mentioned Loretta Devine and Kimberly Elise come to mind, as well as Whoopi Goldberg. Subsequently The Color Majestic all she got was those pathetic comedies (with only sister Human action and Ghost rising to the occasion.)

With that being said there are just as many white actors as in that location are black actors that Hollywood has no idea what to exercise with so I don't think it'south a affair of Hollywood being racist anymore, simply being stupid.

Inaccurate Data

In this film, T.D. Jakes cites the statistic that a woman is "killed by a homo who says he loves her" every 15 seconds. This is inaccurate. The statistic that he should have cited is that a woman is "battered" every 15 seconds. This was a major movement picture (and an enjoyable i at that)and so information technology is difficult to believe facts like that were non vetted. If they were vetted, this would seem to be an intentional distortion.

The movie was impressively shot and presented, and I came away at least impressed with Jakes' acting ability (though perhaps that sort of power is requisite for his line of piece of work). This statistic misrepresentation, however, raises questions nearly Jakes' reliability.

I Rented this Movie on Video and it Was OK (spoiler)

Warning: Spoilers

I feel that Bishop T.D. Jakes is a gifted minister/preacher/evangelist and I commend him for getting his feet wet, taking a chance and making WTAL happen. Perchance this movie volition inspire other African-American pastors, movie writers and producers to come together and write, direct, produce and act as well in Christian-fabricated movies. Gospel Music/Praise & Worship is uplifting. I was hoping to hear a vocal or two with a scene that would touch me spiritually. The song existence played towards the ending credits was touching, but I experience like they should have had more of that throughout the motion picture. I needed to feel the anointing on this movie and hear a bulletin that would make me want to stand up in the comfort of my living room and desire to shout out hallelujah!!! I didn't do whatsoever of that, but on a lighter note, the office of Michelle is a start. Information technology sent a bulletin that left me thinking. The actors and actresses are very talented. The roles portrayed were practiced, but the manner that the movie was directed was very confusing for me to follow. The beginning scene should have been placed at the end and the way that the scenes switched back and forth from past to the present was confusing and difficult to follow at times. Even though the role of Michelle is fictional, the catastrophe function seemed unfinished and a let-downward for the time spent trying to follow the storyline. I guess the house that she was building at the end that suddenly had doors which had none while she was edifice information technology was a representation of being freed or released either spiritually or in the concrete, but the pic wasn't specific on her consequence or fate and this was a disappointment. As with any movie, y'all tin't but experience something especially when there's a portrayal of a good, victimized or bad grapheme. I recommend that you lot see it at least once. Information technology'southward not a movie that I would like to see for a second time, but it makes a skilful film for seeing at least in one case. Just my two cents.

A frightening dissimilarity betwixt innocence and evil.

I never saw the exposition of life like this in any movie as information technology goes on behind the defunction in the ghetto, and this moving-picture show showed me a minor portion of simply that. The ugly reality of life came to surface in this film. Typically black men in the ghetto don't show much respect toward women, abuse them on a regular basis for their selfish, immoral and degraded sexual perversions, as hinted, behind airtight doors. I felt both surprised and disturbed past the portrayal of the conscienceless, shifty, two-faced and shameless men who very well painted the picture of life and the kind of men ane would meet in the hellish world of drug corruption, prostitution, and poverty. In the terminate, nosotros learn that there is a way out of there for all, but with a large price tag attached to it!

Powerful

That is the real deal! I do not know way as well many things near creative side of the actors and how they suppose to act while a movie, but I know this: I've been in bondage and God has ready me free This is what the movie industry should be all about. Movies that are powerful, inspirational, makes you have the right decisions afterward a life of wrong ones or afterwards a life where other has done wrong decisions for you.

I know that Mel Gibson have washed the Passion and there has been some others that are trying to be God's voice for this humanity that calls for a change of hearts. If the world will not pay attention, that will be its end. If the world will listen carefully to God's Word through these movies, and others similar them, we can make this place a ameliorate place.

Catholic?

I'm sorry, but I looked into it a little, and without any dislike to Catholics, I can't really see that T.D. or the Potter's House church is a Catholic church. I found the website and scanned it, and can't actually see anything that says it's a Catholic ministry. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Anyway, I thought this movie was great, I'd recommend it to anyone who want's to see a moving, message-filled picture show for a modify. I thought the acting was bang-up and I read the volume, it was merely a great chore. Well washed T.D., as well as everybody that worked on this film!

This Movie is AWFUL!!

How can a preacher make a movie that doesn't offer the Grace of God?? How can he show all that misery, that happens all the time in this town, simply non testify Who the Answer is? During the sequences of "revival", at no fourth dimension is the scripture referenced. T.D.Jakes is only about self-assist. He has made himself a bishop. He comes off as but another fraud in this pic. Now they want more lines. Michael Boatman was GREAT, as usual. He is one of the finest African-American actors we have today! Loretta Devine is also i of my favorites. I come across everything she is in. She did a good job with a horrible role/script in this, hopefully terminal, try at movies by the so-called "bishop" Is this enough lines?
